Skype is well known service to make free calls and cheap calls to some countries, and is generally used by computer users. But computers are not portable and so you can’t utilize it to call every time you want. This is where mobiles help out, but Skype can’t adjust with Symbian mobiles right away, there needs to be a client which can make Skype run well with mobiles.

So here is a free Skype client called iSkoot -
logo
iSkoot is a client through which you can make calls to anyone in the world, or can receive calls and also chat through its IM service. International calls can be made in a very cheap price with its SkypeOut service.

desc

The iSkoot technology works in what I think is a bit of a roundabout manner. When you place a call, their software determines what local access point worldwide to direct your call to. Then, your phone dials out (via a regular cell phone call) to an iSkoot server which connects to skype to complete the rest of the connection to your destination phone number.

Installation of iSkoot can be done only with Symbian 9.1 Series 60 3rd Edition and Symbian 9.2 Series 60 3rd Edition.
The mobile phones which can install iSkoot are -
Nokia 3250, Nokia 5500, Nokia 5700 XPress, Nokia E61, Nokia E61i, Nokia E62, Nokia E90, Nokia N73, Nokia N75, Nokia N76, Nokia N78, Nokia N80, Nokia N81, Nokia N95, Nokia N95 8GB.

Register and download iSkoot

Identify the Font from Images with What the Font

27 Aug 2008 In: Featured

logo

Ever wanted to find a font just like the one used by certain publications, corporations, or ad campaigns? Well now you can, using the WhatTheFont font recognition system from My Fonts. Upload a scanned image of the font and instantly find the closest matches. For example, if you want to know what font Technically Personal uses, capture a screen shot of some text, upload it on What the font and see what you find out.

It’s pretty simple to use, just upload the image, fill in any missing letters and let the site do the work for you. I submitted several things - some that I knew the font name and some that I didn’t - and always got a selection of possibilities.

So, if you’ve had your eye on someone else’s font and have been wondering what it is, now is your chance to find out.

One feature I would love them to add will be “download” of fonts identified!! Wouldn’t that be just great?!

Use GMail to send mails from other Email IDs

26 Aug 2008 In: Tutorial

Note: This is a very old trick/tip. I am writing this only for those people who aren’t aware of it as yet.

You can add another email address to your GMail Id by using the Custom ‘from’ option in your GMail account. This alternate email ID can be any (like @yahoo, @msn etc) provided you verify its ownership by replying to verification email. Here is simple procedure to configure this:

  • Sign in Gmail & click on ’settings’ at top right part of the screen.
  • Then click on ‘accounts’ tab & check for ‘Send mail as’ option.
  • Click on ‘add another email address’.
  • Enter other email address and then proceed to verification window.

You need to verify ownership of additional email address being added to your GMail account. Simply click on link received in verification email and you are all set. There is more to it than this, you can set different reply back email ID for emails using additional email ID added to your GMail account!

For example you have added id2@gmail.com ID to current GMail account id1@gmail. You can send emails from id1@gmail account with ID labeled as id2@gmail.com and receive reply back to id1@gmail.com (provided you mention id1@gmail.com as reply back ID). Try it out!

When you are sending with a different ‘From:’ address, your GMail address will still be included in your email header’s sender field, to help prevent your mail from being marked as spam. However except Outlook, most email clients don’t display the sender field!

While most people are staying with Microsoft Windows (with no choice), most of them often feel jealous when someone else work on a nice, stylish aqua looking Mac OSX machine. But now it’s time for things to change, you can get a Mac look for your Windows just by installing Flyakite OSX!

logo

Flyakite OSX is a cool Transformation Pack software that can transform Windows XP to Mac OS X. It will change the entire interface, themes, sounds and popular application skins of XP and will make it look exactly like Leopard.

It is the best Mac OS X transformation pack I have ever seen. It will transform the look of an ordinary Windows XP to resemble the look of Mac OS X. The installer simply automates the process of replacing critical system files, setting registry tweaks, and installing extras such as cursors, sounds, visual styles, etc.

install

During installation, you will be asked to create a System Restore point. I’d recommend you to make one so that in case you get stuck in some problem, you can roll back the changes made. The installer simply automates the process of replacing critical system files, setting registry tweaks, and installing extras such as cursors, sounds, visual styles, etc.

All installed files are stored in the Windows directory in a folder named ‘FlyakiteOSX’ that is hidden by default. All registry values for FlyakiteOSX are written to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\FlyakiteOSX. This makes the uninstallation and cleaning of extra files really easy.

Since many system files will be modified, it would be better to disable your antivirus software for a while as it will keep on alerting you about a malicious application running during installation.

PHP Redirection of Old Pages

25 Aug 2008 In: Tutorial

You can use a simple PHP script to redirect a user from the page they entered to a different web page. One reason you may want to do this is that the page they are trying to access no longer exists. Using this method, they can be seamlessly transfered to the new page without having to click a link to continue.

  • Users are redirected quickly and seamlessly
  • When using the ‘Back’ button, the user is taken to the last viewed page, not the redirect page
  • Works on all browsers

Here’s How:

    1. <?php
    2. header('Location:http://www.yoursite.net/new_page.html');
    3. die();
    4. $f = fopen('demo.txt','w+');
    5. fwrite($f,'Test');
    6. fclose($f);
    7. ?>

    Change the code on the redirect page to be simply this. You need to replace the URL above with the URL you wish to direct to.

  1. Be sure that you do not have any text sent to the browser before this, or it will not work. Your safest bet is to simply remove all content from the page but the redirect code.

    <html>
    <?php
    //this will NOT work, the browser received the HTML tag before the script
    header( ‘Location: http://www.yoursite.com/new_page.html’ ) ;
    ?>

Tips:

  1. Remove all code but this
  2. Mention on the new page that user’s should update their links and bookmarks

Airtel challenges iPhone Hackers

25 Aug 2008 In: News

logo

Airtel and Apple have worked closer together on the iPhone 3G than previously known. In an interview with Indiatimes, Bharti Airtel’s CIO and IT director Jai Menon claimed that the Airtel version of the iPhone 3G was hacker-proof. Apparently the Airtel-specific applications on the iPhone have been developed closely with Apple and “suitable levels of security” have been taken to ensure that all Airtel Live and Airtel Apps applications remain out of “bounds for hackers”, Mr. Menon told the website. These operator-specific applications were build over a year’s time and were “pretty much a stealth exercise that transpired by leveraging Airtel’s service delivery platform”.

Airtel claims that even if a hacker manages to get another provider’s SIM card to work with an Airtel iPhone 3G, they would still be locked out of Airtel-specific applications.

We imagine a cheaper enterprise would be to hack an import iPhone 3G rather than an Indian piece. But this claim by Airtel might be enough incentive to get those hackers hacking away, just to prove Mr. Menon wrong.

Now, who cares if they can make Airtel-specific applications work on a jail-breaked iPhone? Moreover this claim of hacker-proof security is coming from Airtel, whose GPRS and Broadband have always proved to be susceptible to hacking!

What’s your say on this? Do leave your comments below.

NetResView is small free utility which when executed gets the list of all available network resources that are available through LAN. This includes even the admin and hidden shares from all workgroups and domains.

This is a pretty useful tool that you can use to find all the list of available resources available in the network that you are connected. Another feature that I liked about this software is it displays all the resources that you have shared on your computer. This includes folders, printers, admin shares and hidden shares.

This utility does not require any installation, all you have to do is download and run it and it works out of the box without any issues.

The sad part is that this excellent tool does not work in Windows Vista but works perfectly in Windows XP and 2000.
